The device for recording and playing back sound on cylinders invented by Thomas Edison in 1877 and subsequently marketed by his business. In USA usage, often also the device invented by Emile Berliner using flat disks which in Britain is known as a Gramophone, making clear the distinction between the two technologies which USA practice (and the Wikipedia page referenced below) do not.
