A piano capable of playing reproducing rolls on which the expression which characterises the performance of a named pianist has been encoded. Compare with a player piano, on which the piano roll has the notes encoded, but the person playing the roll must introduce the expression by controlling the dynamic and the tempo using the piano's controls. Several manufacturers developed competing and incompatible systems.
