German piano manufacturer founded in the 1820s by Heinrich Engelhard Steinweg, building pianos from his home. Heinrich was later known as Henry Steinway after his emigration to the USA where he founded Steinway & Sons. His eldest son stayed in Germany and partnered with Friedrich Grotrian producing pianos until he followed the family to the USA to take control of the Steinway business after the deaths of his younger brothers. The German business continued under the name Grotrian-Steinweg
